Greater Flamingo - Phoenicopterus roseus. Agios Mamas Lagoon, located between Kassandra and Sithonia peninsula, Halkidiki, Greece.
Many of the species that frequent the lagoon are migratory and protected directly or indirectly by international conventions and European Directives. The site is included in the European network of protected areas Natura 2000.
The lagoon of Agios Mamas in Chalkidiki is a "Site of Community Protection" and "Special Protection Area" Natura 2000 code GR1270004. The lagoon has an area of 626.4 ha.
The wetland has brackish water lagoon with islands, sand-dunes and reedbeds.
Many species of birds live here. Two of them, for which the area is protected are Collared Pratincole and Black-winged Stilt (image below). These species breed here every summer.
In winter you can see the impressive flocks of Greater Flamingo, which live there till spring. In 2020 Greater Flamingo also started breeding in Agios Mama, about 180 nests have been recorded. In Agios Mamas you can also see other bird species, such as Eurasian Hoopoe, Red-rumped Swallow, Black-headed Bunting, Crested Lark, Red-backed Shrike, Woodchat Shrike and many species of ducks, waders and birds of prey.
